Bengali New Year (Poila Boishakh) 1428

Pahela Baishakh or Poila Baishakh is the first day of the Bengali calendar which is the official calendar of Bangladesh. This festival is celebrated on 14 April in Bangladesh and 15 April in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam by Bengalis regardless of religious faith.

Poila Baisakh also marks the beginning of the new financial year for the Bengali business community, which visits shops and buys valuables as it signifies good fortune. They also worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on this day.

People from the Bengali community celebrate Poila Baisakh by greeting each other ‘Shubho Nobobarsho’. They seek blessings from God and their elders. Several dishes are prepared to mark the day, houses are decked up and people wear new clothes.

To celebrate this festival, our students of Classes I to VIII took part in several activities virtually with joy. The little ones drew pictures of Ganesha and coloured it, some used lentils and spices to give a beautiful look to Ganesha’s picture. Some students made videos while reciting, singing and dancing and shared the joy of new beginning while some shared photos of handmade Bengali Calendar. Senior students depicted how other states celebrate the festival of through short videos.
