Consumers are the kings and hence they need to be always served with the best.
Consumer protection was not necessary when the communities were smaller because in those days unfair trade practices were not common. But as the markets grow exponentially, demand for consumer products also increases significantly, and consequently the number of producers and manufacturers also rose significantly.
With a view to increase market share and earn higher and higher profits, many of these manufacturers adopted wrong practices to exploit consumers primarily due to lack of awareness and inadequate laws and regulations. Some of the examples of consumer exploitation are adulterated products, misleading advertisements, overcharging prices, etc. As a result, consumers are deprived of their basic rights.
To safeguard the consumers, the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was introduced.
The Consumer Protection Act provides for the following rights of the consumer:
In India, every year National Consumer Right Day is observed on 24th December. The Day is observed to spread awareness about the consumer’s rights and needs and to ensure that the consumers are not subjected to market abuse or social injustice that may undermine their rights.
To mark the day, we at, Krishnagar Public School, Nadia, encouraged our students to speak on the topic “Consumer Rights of a Person”, prepare a PowerPoint presentation on National Consumers Rights Day and take a photo while dealing with a shopkeeper/ vendor/ seller.
